Andrew Keeling's Diary
|
2009-05-08 - 7:37 a.m. The week has been filled by emerging music for the horn and piano commission. What's been arriving is very different from previous pieces, although I can detect a development of musical language. One thing's for certain: the former 'contemporary' sound has finally been laid to rest. Jim phoned re the acoustic album. By Sunday I should have several test pressings to consider. Last evening I listened to the whole of it, avoiding it at all cost for some time, and trying to stand outside it i.e. distancing myself from the music. One thing struck home: it's all very 'nice' but courts no great musical risks. It's melodic. I think that's a reasonably honest appraisal. I've also begun thinking about writing Part 2 of the Comsat Angels analysis now the King Crimson ITCOTCK work is complete, tranferring the hand-written musical examples of Part 1 to computer-set ones, and revising it slightly. I was much impressed by the band's performance in Sheffield a fortnight ago. It proved one thing: the Comsats, like King Crimson, lie beyond fashions. Their music has longevity. More flute practising. John Kimber kindly sent stuff.
