Elizabeth and Liam left for home on Wednesday. Since then, more work on the horn and piano piece. Much done on the second movement of this, or rather, the piano's role.

Flute practising and same with guitar. Out of the blue on Wednesday evening, someone phoned inviting me to play a song in a concert in the new year, along with a request that one of the songs on First Things be included on a compilation album. I accepted both invitation and request. This is something I wouldn't have even considered, say, five years ago. However, I'm beginning to wonder if, perhaps, First Things represents the 'missing fourth': the inferior function that had somehow become submerged with all the composition and musicology, somewhat primitive I realise, but necessary. There has been, over the years, something of a struggle to reconcile the more lyrical features of my musical language with aspects of compositional technique culled from the educative process which might be called 'intellectual' processes. In some cases there's been some success, but I continue to feel there's some way to go. The horn and piano piece represents another pointer along the way.
